Background Notes

These publications include facts about the land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy, and foreign relations of independent states, some dependencies, and areas of special sovereignty. The Background Notes are updated/revised by the Office of Electronic Information and Publications of the Bureau of Public Affairs as they are received from the Department's regional bureaus.

National Atlas

North American Environmental Atlas launches comprehensive land cover map
A new map in the North American Environmental Atlas that reveals the complex mosaic of North America’s land cover of forest, prairies, deserts, and cities is being launched for the public. The map, which won an award at the 2009 International Cartographic Association meeting and was featured in the December 2009 issue of Canadian Geographic, depicts 19 classes of land cover at a spatial resolution of 250 meters.
